How do you become involved in the start up educational community?

I'm looking to get involved with the educational start up community, and I'm unsure how to start. Any suggestions would be great.

Get started in what capacity? As an engineer/entrepreneur/teacher?

I would scour local events related to the topics that interest you and meet people in the industry. Meetup.com is good for this. I'm sure there are others too.

Best of luck.

EdSurge also hosts periodic meetups in the EdTech space that might interest you. They've been wildly popular.

Do you have a product to sell? I left the classroom to market my product Grammar the Write Way. I started with connections which has been slowly successful. To really break into the industry, I need to make my product 100% electronic.

Beyond Meetup, you may also want to connect with an EdTech incubator (and the companies in their portfolios). Socratic Labs is the only one that I'm aware of, but there are probably others.

Thank you for your responses. Lauren, I do not have a product to market yet, but I do have an idea. My issue is that I do not have the engineering or software background knowledge to make it viable. I have looked at Edsurge and have a connection there; however, I'd like to try and make connections through this to see where it leads because there is quite a bit of talent on here.

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, as it seems you asked specifically to find more tech related help. Another accelerator is LearnLaunchX, a subsidiary of LearnLaunch which is New England based newsletter. They offer a 3-month accelerator, so if you have the interest or time to come up from Baltimore, this may be helpful. More info here

+1 for Edsurge. If you need specific help, feel free to contact me. I have an Ed Tech startup with a strong engineering team.
