Press releases: Any experience with paid distribution services or recommend any free options?

I'm gearing up for an eyewear product launch and want to ensure my press release is very effective. I'm doing my best leg work to find my target editorials and blogs but I was hoping to hear if any of you have had success with paid or free press release distribution channels. Thanks!

All a waste of money. PR takes a hands on approach that works with reporters to tell your story. Distribution, free or paid, is a waste of money (yes, I said free distribution is a waste of money).

The only thing that intrigues me, and I say it that way as I have yet to really try it yet, is this:http://www.crowdbuilder.co/
Rather than distributing, their are doing all the work of finding and connecting with the right media contacts based on the story you have to tell, then handing it over to you to get your story told.

Great, thanks for the information Paul. I'm looking at crowdbuilder now. I'll let you know if it works out.

Press release = Do Not Read for most professional journalists. Might get picked up a link farm but that's it. You need to work the phones and convince people why they should write about you. No easy shortcuts unfortunately.

It depends what you expect from your Press Release. I tried the two top services (PRNewswire and PRWeb) and neither achieved any more for me than getting a bunch of links. My story appeared on YahooFinance with PRNewswire and it was nice be able to post that article to my social media. I got some traffic to my website, but not high quality traffic. No media people will pick up the story from the Press Release. So if you want to use it to boost appearances in searches and get some traffic, you will get that. But in my opinion, it's not worth the cost.
