What's the best way to search for the right CPA?

Yelp, google search and friend referrals got me so far, working with accountants and CPAs.

But I have yet to find the ideal person who understands the tech startup world well. Anyone know a good way to search for CPAs in Los Angeles area?

Depending on your CPA needs, you might want to look into www.indinero.comfor your accounting/taxes/payroll needs. They're a tech startup as well so they speak the language. I run a tech startup and I require having good visibility into my financial status and indinero provides it. They also team you up with your own contacts and they're VERY responsive (same day answers to questions, etc).

I'd recommend them for your initial accounting needs for a tech startup.

Asli The approach depends on your need for the CPA. When starting up a company that you expect either to sell for a substantial sum or take public, go with the local office of a big firm like McGladrey. It is harder to find a CPA for a firm that plans to stay small. Try local companies more developed than you for suggestions, also incubators and such. Doug In a message dated 3/31/2014 3:41:14 P.M. @Taylor indinero is an interesting options. Looking into it.

@Douglas, I'm glad you brought up the point that big firms may not be the best fit for me. We are a company that services multiple startups. Therefore, the plans to sell or go public is not in talks just yet. I'm looking for an individual or a boutique company, that works with small businesses and startups, who will work closely with me on a continuous basis, not just during tax season.

Let me rephrase my question actually. Does anyone know of a secret website that I don't know of, an alternative to Yelp, basically, to search for CPA's in your area, see their ratings and all that stuff.

@Jessica, in fact, I haven't found a discussion that answers this in prior discussions.

try QuickBooks.com - worth a try. i just took a quick (15 seconds) look and found this link ("find your local QuickBooks expert today" - http://proadvisor.intuit.com/find-a-proadvisor/search.jsp?latitude=047.612&longitude=-122.335&zipCode=98115&_requestid=97856) and another for the "quickbooks community"

does your CPA need to be local?

Really no need to have them be local so all the other answers that are locale based apply to everyone.

The CPA is for insurance or certification in case you end up in court over filing mistakes on your returns. If the IRS determines you made an error you still pay. The CPA is more about checking your work if you have a large company and if you do have a large company as in a corporation be sure your CPA is a corporation certified CPA because they are very different. Otherwise you do not need a CPA, a simple book keeper is cheaper or just do it yourself. Do not use Quickbooks if you can there are simplier programs more suited to your business. .
