Neelesh, I used to work in the press release business. Are you wondering about tools to build a press release or the distribution of them? Dave Sent from an IPhone and probably full of grammatical errors.

Hi David,

I am looking for the distribution. I checked the PRWeb. They seem reasonable. Now the question is are they effective?

Can I offer an answer with a question? Why are you doing a press release?? Press releases don't do anything for you anymore. Build a section of your website for "announcements" in WordPress or something and post your press release there. Push it out to your email distribution list, facebook, G+, and Twitter; you'll get more out of it than putting it on the wire.

To get the press, you need a story; something more than the announcement itself. Build your roster of media contacts and call each of them with your announcement and that story - in which you have a quote, stat, or something relevant to make the story more compelling.

Neelesh, I used to work for Business Wire, a company that has the largest market share in the press release distribution business ( PRN is #2) . I am a little bias toward their services but I think if you are on a really tight budget that Pr Web is good for just a web blast, but not traditional media. The thing about press releases is that there is so much information out there and so little gets "picked up" that the majority of the time it just gets posted to a bunch of aggregators and just sits on the web. In a lot of ways Paul is right, email is really the best way to reach reporters. D ?

the tool is called Vocus and will cost you about $100 but it is very expensive to sign up for their subscription

I have a question to all of you: the press release distribution system is, as stated above, fairly ineffective and can be very expensive, especially if you are using a PR firm to write and distribute.

Would you pay a small (under $100) monthly fee + a per release price of $200 to join a network that sent your releases/stories and posted your searchable profiles to demonstrably interested offline and online media? Not mass distribution but proprietarily targeted. I know there are sites out there that claim to do this but they are primarily marketing companies and their results are not much better than the pure distribution sites.

(This relates to a startup some journalists and I are working on so your feedback is truly appreciated.)
