Creative methods of crowd-sourced voting for 1 min pitch contest

Hi There,

I'm volunteering to help organize a 10 day Startup Week in the Okanagan
Valley, BC, Canada (www.startupweekokanagan.com). One of the events that
I'm working on is a 1 min. pitch competition with vested companies and a
cash prize. Instead of judges, I'd like the crowd to help choose or choose
the winner(s). Does anyone have any creative methods of voting that are
tech-based (ie. an app), inexpensive, fun and engaging?

Look forward to your responses,

Daylin Mantyka

You could definitely use
http://socrative.com/
It makes it easy to show live results coming in on a screen and you
could set up a couple metrics on which people could vote.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will definitely check these
out. Micheal - great point on downloading an app vs having it
web-based.

For reference - crowd = members within the room at the event.

Clynton- Our Startup Weekend is still 3 days, but we've extended it to
an entire 10 days to celebrate music, arts, tech, business and
entrepreneurship. Also, can you clarify the Twitter voting concept.
Every time someone tweeted a # that counted as a vote?

Thanks all,

Daylin

Yeah, genius idea from the organizers of StartNorfolk (now Silicon
Anchor) - including Zack Miller...

The 'crowd' was asked to tweet with the hashtag of the event plus the
'startup' they liked best. The event hashtag was watched and the tally
done at the end of all the pitches (while the judges were deliberating
over the main group)

Thanks
Clynton

Socrative is web based and works on all devices mobile and otherwise
Also the people voting don't need to make an account. You will just
give out your "class code"

Pitch competition we won some money at this past weekend used
http://www.pigeonhole.sg/  Also allows you to crowdsource questions for 2-3
minute Q&A following the pitch (if applicable).

Although we placed second in audience choice, so it might be buggy. ;-)

If you pitch this to Twilio they are likely to sponsor your event if you
use their product for the voting system as they're very keen to get
exposure. It's a texting (SMS) and phone based cloud software.

Great idea, Chris. I'll look into it. Have they sponsored an event you've been involved with?

Thanks, again, everyone. I'll keep you posted on what system I end up using.

I'm currently finalising sponsorship for a two day 600 delegate tech
conference I'm organising in london this April.
They have sponsored some of my friends' hackathon events and Meetup groups
also - nice guys.
