What pieces of software can I use to start a community with?

Surely this exists. What software do you recommend? Last I looked, there were forums, BuddyPress, and so on. I want Facebook-in-a-box with low to no overhead. I don't want cloud hosted like Ning. Thoughts?

If you're looking for an internal site, I was at a company that managed great things with ClearSpace. That was about five years ago and it's turned into something much more robust since then:

Can you not leverage existing social platforms via their APIs and OAuth? This smells like it might reinventing the wheel to me.

A Yammer external network, maybe? It's really a good privateTwitter/Facebook "knockoff".

Yammer, Jive Software, IBM Connections, Salesforce Chatter, Tibbr (Tibco) and many others are options. If don't want to go Cloud, you would look at Jive or IBM.

You can do a quick test by signup at Yammer to see how easy it is. Others are not as easy to setup.

There are many others, these are the commercial (non-open source) options.

I would suggest either elgg / socialengine or phpfox, we can help customizing it as well.... they are pretty rock solid in my opinion.

Meetup! I have joined Seattle Tech Meetup 5 months ago that it was about 100 attending memebers, and this week, we had over 400! It's free for members and not expensive to open and maintain a meetup group. I have been member of Meetup art communities also!

It existed for like 6 months - I wrote portions of the code until a failed acquisition attempt. Anyway, the code is still on SourceForge.net, if you're so inclined to take it and run with it: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ringside/?source=directory. Thanks, -Brian

These are some great responses thanks all.. I truly was expecting some answer as simple as those email splash pages you can sign up for. At least your responses were pretty varied, but I'll check some of them out! Thanks!
