Thanks everyone. It seems that my question may have been too brief. I'm looking to test an offer/message with a particular market (e.g. VP Sales 200M to 500M Revenue at company that sells capital equipment or software) since this is just a test to see if the offer and message are appealing to this market, and I need to perform this test in 2 or 3 weeks from now, I was thinking that a 1 time list rental of about 1000 names would make sense. And then we would divide it in half to test two different offers. I don't have experience with email lists, and I'm reading on line today trying to get educated, so any suggestions or ideas on how to test an offer in a market are welcome. Thanks!

VP sales is obviously a different animal than VP marketing. Are you trying to reach both groups or sales only? So the "test" is to see how your message/offer plays with the group and you will determine that by measuring "conversion" rate (open or response) from an email?

@Rob I would start with Sales with one offer and message. Yes to your second question. We would likely run several tests, testing different messages and dial in the process before moving to the next target which would likely be Marketing. then Service.

This seems like an easy triangulation problem from 2 different data sources. Since the industry is nebulous, you will need to look at coarse data providers.

a) put together your target company list from d&b data (
b) hire an offshore firm to get your vp of sales contact info for those targets from linkedin + web + corporate research -- expect to pay $0.10 to $0.15 per contact (maybe a little more).

Even a) could be done with offshore and you could have all the work done in <2 weeks for <$400.

One caveat -- these are VP of Sales at a decent-sized companies. They are focused on selling over being sold to and they're busy. Your email is going to have to REALLY speak to them to get any sort of response out of 1000 cold emails. It will be lucky to a break 5% response rate even if it's exceptionally well written and targeted. Your expectation should be that this will take a few weeks of intense emailing (hope you have email marketing automation).

You might want to look at getting warm referrals into a smaller group that may actually respond. Or try sales 2.0 referral email stuff but that will probably take longer than the 2-3 weeks you have available.
